HISTORY

While the FPG is the newest art gallery in Wellfleet, the building itself has a rich history. It was originally assembled in the early 1900s with parts and pieces rescued from Billingsgate Island. Many structures were floated off of this once great Cape Cod town when it succumbed to erosion and finally was submerged. The list of owners includes Wellfleet legend Duffy Gardinier, and the Balch family, who kept it as a storage utility for the Capt. Higgins restaurant for decades. The building, as well as Capt Higgins, enjoyed a recent restoration and renovation by gallery founder Steve Swain, and is now loving life on the shore.
