PAUL SUGGS
PAUL SUGGS WELLFLEET
Artist, Paul Suggs came to Wellfleet more than 35 years ago after completing training as a fine artist/painter at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Inspired by the striking light and subtle landscape of the Lower Cape Paul’s early work has an impressionist style using primarily oils. Shifting to use of acrylics, more recently Paul’s paintings reflect a photorealistic style tracing back to influences of instructor’s such as Chuck Close and Malcolm Morley from the School of Visual Arts.
Guided by the natural light and beauty around him and using photographic reference, Paul captures the dramatic play of light and shadow in the simple landscape of the Cape. His scenes are grounded with the use of architecture, a house, a boat that brings the viewer to the spot and the season. Paul chooses both early morning and late afternoon light to imbue his paintings with a sense of calm and serenity.
